A Guide to Fantasy Fliers and Feathered Wings

Description

A few years ago when I started drawing my angel character Ikaelo – who will be the model for this little infographic, I started browsing DA and other sites for tutorials on wings. While there is plenty of good information to be had out there, I didn’t find anything specifically like this. So now that a few years have gone by and I’ve had some practice at it, I wanted to put this together as a general resource for others. This is NOT a how-to-draw tutorial; there are lots of those and most of them are done by people much, much more talented than I am. This is more of a diagram of the hypothetical science of angel wings and other fantasy creatures by extension. (It's mostly for feathered wings, but I feel like a lot of the information could also be applied to bat-winged critters like dragons, gargoyles, nosferatu, etc.) Remember: it’s okay if your science and your fantasy mingle with each other! Just because you’re focusing on one doesn’t mean you have to throw the other one on the side of the road. If there seems to be interest or a call for it, I will post the sources I used researching this - and there are many. O_O Feel free to download for the whopping big full-sized version!

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy reading, and that someone will get some use out of it. ^_^

This is probably the only tutorial I've seen so far that put real though into the scapula and it would have to be huge - just like a bird's - to attach the wings to the rest of the body. You have my genuine respect for that.
